Our beginnings

The Department of External Studies at Moore College began in the 1940's because of the need to properly train lay preachers for Anglican Churches within the Diocese of Sydney. Initially, students attended lectures in the evenings by the Principal, Archdeacon T.C. Hammond, but gradually the course was offered by correspondence to those living some distance from the College. The original notes were roneod copies of the lectures.

In 1945 there were about 70 students studying in the course. Some 60 years later there are 5,000 students from 50 countries around the world.  In many countries, especially Africa, India and South America, the course is being used to train leaders, evangelists and pastors. The course has been translated into Chinese and Spanish while new translations in Indian languages and Hausa (Nigeria) are being developed. We praise God for what has taken place and look forward to the future with eager expectation.
